The back-cover photo readers remember and the bookstore actually prints. Author headshots in Fort Myers for novelists, nonfiction authors, and academics.
One author client said it directly: "I wanted photos for an author branding website." Most arrive saying no photos in 10 years they actually liked. JA Headshots delivers author headshots in Fort Myers built for book jackets, Amazon Author Central, press kits, and your author site.

What makes a great author headshot?
A great author headshot matches the tone of your book and shows your face clearly. It feels like a person a reader would want to spend 300 pages with.
The photo is warm enough to be inviting, specific enough to be memorable, sharp enough to print full-resolution on a dust jacket.
The mistake most authors make is treating the headshot like a corporate profile photo. A literary fiction writer with a stiff LinkedIn shot sends the wrong signal. The photo is part of the book's packaging.
Publishers, agents, and booksellers read author photos as a cue to voice. Your author photo is doing marketing work whether you've planned for it or not. The Fstoppers primer on headshot and portrait photography covers print-quality standards for portrait use on jackets and press kits.
How should I prepare for my author headshot session?
Plan three things: wardrobe, tone, and what to leave behind. The more context Joshua has on the book, the better the photo matches the work. For more on what to wear, see our photography services overview.

What does a professional author headshot session include?
Every author session at our Fort Myers studio includes unlimited time and posing coaching from Joshua. You also get multiple backgrounds and lighting setups, plus pro retouching on every image you select.
Pre-session call.
We talk about the book, the genre, the publisher, and where the photo needs to live. A memoirist needs different feel than a cozy mystery author, and that shapes background, lighting, and expression.
Studio session.
No timer. Most author sessions run 45 to 75 minutes because we typically explore two or three looks. Real-time direction on posture, chin angle, and eye line.
Curated review.
You pick the images you want kept. Each one gets pro retouching, skin smoothing, color correction, and background cleanup at high resolution.
Multi-format delivery.
Final files arrive in 48 to 72 hours, sized for print (book jackets, press kits, trade publications) and web (Amazon, Goodreads, your site, podcast guest pages).

Studio or environmental: which is better for author photos?
Both work. Authors tend to prefer environmental portraits more than any other profession we photograph. Setting can do real storytelling work. Our portrait studio is set up for both looks. Florida's writing community is strong, with the Sanibel Island Writers Conference and the Naples Writers' Festival driving local promotional needs.

Author headshot vocabulary
Concepts that frame an author photo — book jackets, press kits, and online platforms.
A tightly framed portrait focused on the face, shoulders, and expression. Used for LinkedIn profiles, company about pages, press kits, and any context where a single image stands in for the person.
A package of media-ready assets a person, business, or product provides to journalists and event programs. Always includes high-resolution headshots in multiple aspect ratios so editors can use them at any cropping.
The deliberate shaping of how a professional presents themselves in public-facing channels. A headshot is the visual anchor of a personal brand; the same person can read confident, approachable, or commanding depending on how the portrait is shot, lit, and edited.
